About Louisa May Alcott

Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888) was a novelist best known for Little Women, the semi-autobiographical story of four sisters growing up during the Civil War. Raised in Concord among Transcendentalists including Emerson and Thoreau, she was the daughter of educator Bronson Alcott. An abolitionist and feminist, she served as a Civil War nurse and became the first woman to register to vote in Concord (1879). She also wrote sensation novels under the pseudonym A.M. Barnard. Little Women has been adapted for film and television numerous times.
